 Pembroke Pines, Fla…. August 11, 2011…. Studio in the Pines Artist Jill Slaughter was recognized by The Cultural Foundation of Broward, in the organization’s very first, “Faces of the Arts in Broward Challenge.”  The event was held in conjunction with the Symphony of the Americas Summerfest concert at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts on July 20.

Slaughter is one of eighteen artists who have studios at Studio 18 in the Pines.  Studio 18, now celebrating its first year, is dedicated to promoting the arts and introducing the community to working artists in Pembroke Pines.

“In November 2010, the cultural Foundation of Broward, in conjunction with the Broward Cultural Council, invited the public to submit an essay, a photo or a :30 second video on how the arts have impacted their lives,” said Jody Leshinsky, Community Development Director for the Broward Cultural Division. Slaughter, an artist, was selected as a winner based on the impact of her essay. “We work to enhance the community’s cultural environment through the development of the arts,” continued Leshinsky.  “The Faces of the Arts challenge was another step in furthering our mission.”

“We are fortunate to have a venue such as Studio 18 in the Pines which helps to brings out the best in the artist,” said Dean Combs, Director of Parks and Recreation.  Studio 18 welcomes groups and organizations to tour the 11,000 square foot artist studio. Essay

August will mark the fourteenth anniversary of my divorce. Officially marking the same length of time my former spouse and I were married.

The marriage provided a sanctuary of material comforts. When it ended so to did the luxuries I had grown accustomed to.

Downsizing would not begin to accurately reflect my change in circumstance. No more alphabetically stocked pantry, no color coded linen closet, no household help, no house, and certainly no place to paint anymore.

One year ago after applying, I was awarded a space at Studio 18. Then a newly opened, newly renovated studio and gallery space for emerging and mid-career artists in Pembroke Pines. While my divorce caused me to let go of many cherished possessions what my ex-husband could not take was my talent.

And while I continue to live in a tiny apartment my vision has expanded because of my cherished studio which affords me the space to create work as a painter and belong to a community of like minded colleagues.

Studio 18 is dedicated to promoting the arts and introducing the community to working artists in Pembroke Pines.
